I know that I am somewhat nosy and secretive - I prefer to find out more about others than I am willing to share about myself.

In September, New Scientist magazine had some reports on Living Online about online social networking, such as MySpace, and one was entitled "The end to privacy?" (you can only read the first part of the article in the NS archives, but found that someone had a copy of the whole text).
Articles like that one, and ones like How to Dissuade Yourself from Becoming a Blogger mention how public the information that you put online could be, unless you expressly make it otherwise.

It is these kind of reasons that makes me reluctant to write much about things that may be personal or revealing, but that could be said in public (I tend not to write private posts and few friends only ones).
Perhaps I feel that talking about some things or 'opening up', could be make oneself vunerable to having what has been said used against them. So I tend to limit what I write about.

Well, I lock to friends only any posts that might contain information I don't want the whole world to know. But at the end of the day, you could probably find me in any number of public directories such as phone books, etc, that would supply you with what you needed to know anyway. :|

That's ok. I understand that *snugs*

*nod* well you can find stories about people getting into trouble because of what they have written in their blogs, that sort of thing. and sometimes there could be accidents when posting something that is supposed to be private (think there was a previous problem with ljseek bots looking in journals that didn't want to be searchable).

Anyway, will try to post more public stuff. :)

Yes. Very true. I'm super careful about that now - in fact had something like that happen to me, but due to my carelessness rather than an ljseek-style bot. I thinhk those ones were related to the memes that went around ...

Yes :P

I worry about that a bit too. I can be pretty vague in my entries sometimes and friends lock a lot of things when i am not sure about the ramifications of what i am saying!!

Yes, it's good to take precautions.

I think it depends on how public you post your information and if not, how much you trust the people around you.
